Today, let’s jump right into a fun mirror image drawing art lesson! In honor of the Pilgrims and their MAJOR role in U.S. history, let’s create some art representing these amazing historical figures. It’ll be a great way to kick off our study of their lives!
Mirror Image Drawing: Pilgrim Girl and Boy
As an added bonus, Thanksgiving is only THREE months away (gulp), and these sweet mirror image drawing templates would be a great craft to keep little hands busy during the holiday!
One features a charming pilgrim girl, while the other showcases an adorable pilgrim boy.
These templates focus on facial features–and they include a grid–enabling children to produce mirror-image portraits with precise attention to detail.
Why I Like Symmetry Drawing!
I still remember completing my FIRST symmetry drawing in high school art. I was actually amazed at my results when I drew a mirror image portrait from (half) a picture that I cut out of a magazine.
Mirror image drawing is an excellent technique for homeschool art, as it encourages your students to carefully observe and replicate exactly the features that they see on the completed side of the “mirror image!”
By doing so, they can improve their attention to detail and hand-eye coordination! I’m a big fan!
Happy homeschooling!

Supply List:
To ensure your art session goes smoothly, here’s a list of supplies your budding artists will need:
Pencils: As I learned in college, a good pencil can make a world of difference in your drawing! I personally prefer a slightly softer pencil.
High-quality printer paper: I HARP on this all the time! High-quality paper provides a smooth surface for your students to bring their mirror image drawings to life. Hammermill doesn’t know I exist, but as long as they make such an excellent 32lb paper, I will always recommend them!
Eraser: A stand-alone, kneadable eraser will come in handy when refining their drawings or making corrections.
Colored pencils or markers: Once the mirror image drawings are complete, adding a splash of color will bring vibrancy and depth to the artwork.
